Chopping Boards

Wooden Chopping Boards
Wooden chopping boards are an attractive and practical addition to any kitchen. The natural beauty of timber combined with its strength allows for various styles of board. The two types of timber board are Edge Grain, made from strips of wood cut along the grain, and End Grain, made from blocks of wood cut across the grain. Edge Grain timber boards are common and can be made from various timbers, including Acacia wood and Bamboo.Generally, Edge Grain chopping boards are strong and not prone to warping. These boards may show knife cuts because the knife cuts across the wood grain of the board. End Grain timber boards are made from blocks of wood which show the end of the wood grain. These boards have a 'softer' surface, as a knife does not cut across the grain, but sinks between the fibres of the grain. Knife cuts made into End Grain boards tend to be self healing, as the fibres part with each cut, then move back into line.

Plastic Chopping Boards
These boards are often colour coded for commercial kitchens, with colours that match the foods being chopped on them. Coloured plastic boards are also useful in a domestic kitchen for separating tasks, for example use one board for cutting raw meat, and another board for salad vegetables, eliminating the chance of cross contamination. The cleanliness and hygiene of plastic chopping boards is ensured if they are cleaned in a dishwasher.
